I am always deeply curious in following ancestral wounding back to see if I can locate the initial wound (sometimes all you have are family stories and hear-say, eg Uncle was a closet drinker and Maybelle had to 'go away' for awhile in her last year of high school - that sort of thing. You can see a suspicious pattern but it's not entirely clear what the initial wound was (giving away an unplanned child? PTSD from war or some other unknown thing?) Sometimes all you are left with is puzzling reactive behavior that was learned from the wounded individual and passed down to later generations. I think as a species we've spent a lot of time ignoring and pretending that wounds aren't there, but sooner or later there will be a person (or people) who have the emotional fortitude or the ability to see and speak truth who name the dysfunction.

They are usually the family members who make others really uncomfortable with their astute observations (Uncle is a drunk!)
